I am narrowing down the vibration in my front end. It is noticeable above 60-65 mph. I'm going to have my wheels balanced and rotated to ensure that isn't it. Sometimes it's more evident first thing in the morning before the car has warmed up.
It isn'...

While replacing my break pads recently I discovered the boot on my front right CV joint is tore up pretty bad.
I'm thinking of replacing the whole joint since I don't know how long its been exposed to the elements and I've got 170K on the vehicle anyway...

What I did was ,pull the axle, clean and repack the joint.
AlsoI had the same thing a while back.
With the cv joint busted open? Yeah I was gonna say it is usually cheaper to buy a whole new joint.

Thanks.

Do CV joints need regreased periodically? I have a '78 SC and new joints were installed about 40K miles ago. But that was 20 years ago. I notice a slight grease mark on one of the boots, but no cuts or splits. Thanks, Bob

Really not much going on inside CV's that extreme grease maintenance is going to help.
Could add back any "lost" grease and re-boot.

I took my 1995 Legacy 2.2 into the shop to get a muffler leak

(common problem I've heard), and that my CV boots were shot.
Coincidentally NOW my CV joints are making some noise, which

If I recall correctly from my antique VW days, you used to be
able to get replacement CV boots that didn't require you to remove
the shafts to replace the boots.

Can CV joints get stiff, like a U-joint, and cause a vibration? I know of several parts on the front end of my Corsica that need replaced, but at 255K and as far as I know the original half-shafts, I'm wondering if I shouldn't look into that as well.....

In short yes
they wear and become loose, then they work their way apart, mostly in turns, at which bearing, worn inner or outer tie rods, worn ball joints, or an extremely worn cv half shaft.

This is drivers side half shaft at the transmission. Does this look like transmission fluid coming out of the trans or grease from the joint? The car has 28,000 miles on it. I shouldn't have a problem getting this fixed under warranty should I?

Highly doubt VW is going to throw a $400 axle at it for a little leaking grease .
It also is not "wet" enoughIt's grease from the joint, not tranny fluid.
That is not a leaking CV joint.
Warranty ? Show the dealer what you found.
