I am just learning python on my ubuntu 8.04 machine which comes with python 2.5 install. Is 2.5 too dated to continue learning? How much of 2.5 version is still valid python code in the newer version?

It is certainly not "dated" - I still use Python 2.5.

I don't think it is 'too dated' to use, but there are some is that Python 2.5 is the version most in use today.

Suppose I have a record with a column called "Name". Each record can be effective dated, so I also have an effective date and an expiry date column.
The "Name" column has to be unique, but only within overlapping periods of the effective date and expiry...

Perhaps you could use the 'date' command to actually set the server date according to the directory name (value of $d) each time.
The svn history will show everything being committed on the current date.

Depending on how it is implemented, it might be a sign integer, which means you can refer to dates....
Are you running into an issue of 32 bit time? Usually CTIME, 32 bit time, is counted as seconds since Jan 1, 1970, mignight plus one second, GMT .
