Sometimes using DBAN takes several days to wipe a disk. What alternatives do you have experience with that work within a few hours and offer the simplicity of DBAN? I am mainly interested in free solutions but am happy to hear what works for you.

It sounds like you're probably running into hardware variations that cause DBAN to run slower (on older job wiping the drives clean so there's virtually zero chance even the most advanced data recovery recovery firms did not want....

We use DBAN Are there different prices for the different services? I would think of DBAN with 3 passes then drill a hole or 2 through the plates We use DBAN 1st and then we hit them a few approach too, digital and analog destruction....
Whenever I wipe an HDD with DBAN to send it back/give it to someone/whatever, I always wonder if I could damage that drive if I use too many passes. Is that possible? For that matter, if one keeps writing and then deleting large files from a hard drive...

DBAN disk writes are no different from OS disk writes, they just: - are done to every sector to make sure no existing parts of files are left to be found by un-erase / recovery utilities operations, so DBAN will eat away some ....

I have a HP box on my bench right now that the owner wants wiped and then restored so she can donate it to charity. The Hard Drive has a recovery partition on it. I am kinda perplexed how to do this? If I wipe the drive i destroy the recovery partition...

Just use DBAN to boot the PC and wipe the 2nd partition and then boot into the recovery mode to restore.

I am really looking to setup a set at recovery and repair operations on Windows machines, but is equally usable for Linux recovery issues pretty GUI too! Oh yes....

It may be that HP continued to ship recovery discs with business class notebooks on the harddrive to restore the O/S since....
It is a "business class" PC.
Two for winxppro and two for Vista.
Four discs were in the package.
With recovery discs.
What are the recommended steps to take before getting rid of a computer by either giving it away or throwing it away? Is using Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) enough?

Backup or image the system....
:) If you're REALLY paranoid about data and don't know what than DBAN.
Sometimes license stickers are glued in computer cases in my machine, DBAN is a good choice.
recovery of files a real pain in the ass.
You could also use Disk Wipe, a windows program. If you are a little more paranoid than most you could first encrypt the drive and then wipe it.
