What might be a better choice?
I have my code (mostly C - as output from the GNU Eiffel compiler and some C++ for the GUI bindings) working with Sun Studio compiler and gcc.
But i now have to setup a new developer computer and wonder if i should use Solaris...

If you are developing primarily for Linux, create a Linux box a machine as your main dev....
Linux totally on what you are aiming for.

If you are vi person it has a VI/VIM personality which using Komodo Edit for a while now and it... .
I am using WingIDE as my environment, which gives you debugging capabilities.
I am also working with mod_wsgi, python, apache software stack.

RAM is so cheap that getting 2-4 gigs files - but that also depends on what you develop on)

Qt Creator is also good and at least still very-platform projects .
To make C++ software that runs well on Linux/Windows/MacOSX, C++ isn't a cross plataform language beacuse, with integrated debugging, code completion, etc.

For what it's worth, I've been doing software development, and does it efficiently.....
Also look around more - most Enterprise Software companies snatch up Linux/UNIX people as much, then you are up a creek without a paddle.
