When renting a dedicated server, how can one be certain than he/she is not getting a VPS or some other virtual machine variant instead of a true dedicated hardware box?
Which checks can be run (assuming it is a linux box) to detect such case?

Using HTTP....
SSL starts before the application layer which leads to certificate errors when accessing the host on a hostname that doesn't match the CN value on the certificate .
One reason is to provision multiple SSL encrypted services on the same port .

Fundamentally hardly at all - SEO is based on domain names not on IP addresses (as it pretty much has to be given that most... .
If you have a shared IP, and someone using that IP is blacklisted for spamming or something, it could negatively effect your SEO .

If I rent a dedicated server, and for some reason the IP that I get assigned turns out to be on spam lists, is there any way to clear this up?
If yes, how long does it usually take?
Answer Snippets (Read the full thread at serverfault):
A dedicated server and the IP I was given turned out to be blacklisted (through no fault of mine) I would.

So does mean that Dedicated IP would be set to only one of them ?
If I set SSL for www then if a user goes to a URL manually...

When a company's primary focus is developing, deploying and maintaining software, at what point would it be prudent to hire a dedicated sys-admin? What are the warning signs that you need one?

Managing the network or is having trouble keeping it up, then you should have a dedicated person who knows may need a dedicated sysadmin if this gets to be more than the typical developer's hours worked.

We have a dedicated godaddy server and it seemed to grind to a halt when we had users downloading only 3MB every 2 seconds (this was over about 20 http requests).
I want to look into database locking etc. to see if that is a problem - but first I'm curious...

Don't know if it fits your price range, but I can only say good things about Hetzner: hetzner.de
These are a bit more powerful machines (so a tad more expensive than the specs you mentioned), but www.serverloft.com has very competitive pricing .
