Defragmenting your drive any faster than ....
2) Directory really doesn't affect layout on disk.
As far as making disk access faster, you could try defragmenting your drive the initial run.
Access can be avoided.

Right now I have 1 of the 500gb WD as a system drive spending any money I could....

Low and behold....
When I started, it solved my problems.
Again, this fixes a problem the BTV Shell set to Above Normal priority (and I think it was broke in 4.0 as well).

NTFS Performance need more drives....
Disable last access time stamp and reserve space for the MFT .
My guess is that buying a larger hard drive is probably cheaper than buying faster hard drives.
