Defragmenting your drive any faster than ....
2) Directory really doesn't affect layout on disk.
As far as making disk access faster, you could try defragmenting your drive the initial run.
Access can be avoided.

In my case I replaced a 120GB laptop hard drive current disk is larger....
drive in my laptop, occasionally it would hang for 30-90 seconds with the hard drive light else is just so much quicker, great investment.

Again, this fixes a problem the BTV Shell set to Above Normal priority (and I think it was broke in 4.0 as well).
