It is not like a ....
Software development usually assumes embedded stuff.
However, usually product development refers to the process of defining what the product is, its intended market, motivation, etc.
Software IS a product.
Not to be too defeatist ... ... but if the company doesn't care about software, is it really down to us to just piss in the wind and do the best we can? I've read answers here that mention convincing managment about the bottom line benefit of good software...

The methodology is more a general mindset which sets basic parameters .
I think of the processes as the implementation of the methodology .
It's the same as the difference between process and methodology in any other discipline .
