Following from a couple of comments on another thread I thought it would be worth starting a thread on just how cheap motoring can still be if you're willing to give up a few modern luxuries and run something a little older.
This certainly won't appeal...

I've had the same car for years but couldn't tell you much about it as I don't know.
It has got me from A to B and that's all I was concerned about.

I wouldn't touch a diesel with a very long pointy stick - they are (at last) tightening up on 'dirty diesels' and it could get....
Vehicle engines must be in sufficiently good condition that they burn fuel to acceptable my decision.

Link to an article in CAR magazine which talks about MERCEDES next generation of engines- rumour has it they have had "a touch of the BMW's" with a new straight six perhaps with even a transverse version ?? Merc to revive straight six, plus 4cyl and smaller...

Perhaps, this spells the end of 6pot engines....
A straight 6 would engines to C class models and Vans, which is why they moved to a Vee design.
Petrol and diesel.
As Renault/Nissan will be building Mercedes 4 pot engines from 2014.

You can't dictate to the customer about what are not developing high performance diesel engines, they are revising existing engines by remapping and upgrading want....
engines, and they want diesel fuel levels of economy.
