I put TiVo into Standby when I want to watch "real live" TV or use the VCR to record to the TiVo ....
While tivo is recording the one channel I will switch; VCR -> TV.
Signal in from the bedroom to the big tv.

I'm not a fan of satellite anyway the directive to furnish cable....
This was last month when I replaced my two old Series 2 boxes with Premieres .
I recall having heard that Tivo Premiere models are NOT compatible with satellite.
In the Personal Tech column of this morning's New York Times Business section, columnist Joshua Brushstein tries a Tivo Premiere and basically concludes it's more trouble (and money) than it's worth. Most of the trouble, it turns out, comes not from Tivo...

Now I have an SD Direct Tv DVR and....
I not going to buy, and had a Direct Tivo SD until last fall when the hard drive died.
But that does not excuse Tivo.
I suspect that Direct TV is doing similar things.
Question on Dish / Satellite/ Direct TV. I hear a lot about Dish and satellite TV being less expensive than Cable - Comcast. I have questions on Dish / Satellite/ Direct TV... I am assuming all of these install a dish of some kind outside the house...

Every installer grounded the dish properly it with satellite tv.
Had Direct-tv for about ten years in three locations.

After each try and failure, we had to go back to our initial HD DVR and tell direct TV the ends of the cables coming ....
Card, you can use that card, and call Direct TV, and tell them you would like to marrry a new card deal.
