Basically you should call read() (and....
In other words, it's the wrong tool to use to detect disconnection.
Don't use available() - that says whether or not there's currently data available, not whether there will be data available in the future .

Also, Make sure you don't have your Cordless phone base sitting on top of your wireless router .
There may be interference in the air causing bad data to drop the connection .
Try changing the Wireless Channel on the router.

As a test try disabling any firewall software temporarily (including windows built in one) and see if it works .
This isn't specific to your questions but many problems with VPNs are caused by firewalls .

I have had a look through all the related questions and I get the feeling my problem is unique.

Have you updated to the latest drivers for the wireless card and BIOS for the motherboard? If it is a repeatable pattern that happens like clockwork, I'd venture a guess that one of these two updates will fix it .

With my 4" suspension lift, when I disconnected my have that problem any more.
It will let your front do disconnect, extended brake lines are useful.
Yes, as above.
Disconnect them when offloading for more front axle flex.
