I can't use a disk wiping program on a malfunctioning disk - it just wouldn't work. If I run...

I would ask, what is the value of the data on the disk?
If it's more than the cost of a new disk, then my preference would be to destroy the faulty disk and buy a new one.

I have an old hard disk (Maxtor 250Gb) from about 3 years ago that started giving errors and now sits in a draw in my desk. It has some confidential data on it but it's unlikely that it can be read because the disk started to go bad. However, before I...

What lifetime can be expected of the typical hard disk? Or are there big differences between different types? And does it make a difference if it is used heavily instead of never being connected to system (for example serving as a backup medium)?

I set Windows 7 to turn off hard disks after 20 minutes of nonuse, which it does a really good job at - it seems to turn off individual hard disks that have been idle for 20 minutes exactly. When I access a drive that I haven't used in 20 minutes, I can...

Here's an easy question for you guys: How do I find out what hard drives are attached to a linux box? I'm hoping for a single command that can give me a nice list of all ata/scsi/etc drives.

Hi,
I have a PC with 2 internal SATA 7,200rpm harddisks: one is a 1TB western digital, the other is 750GB. I'm copying data between them - but seems to be very slow: e.g to copy 140GB takes about 5 hours.
Does this seem reasonable?
Thanks
