Be careful....
Unthread the remainder of the fan nut if you havent already done so.
The shroud needs to be completely loose for this step, so make sure it is pulled up first .
Step 29: Remove the fan and fan shroud by pulling up and out.

Read the E46 Wiki before going any further, you need to know what you in for an expensive ride.
Here's the stats on what I paid for my last 3 E46s replaced which isn't a big deal.
Should be able to find a good deal on an E46.

I wont be able to pull the VANOS unit off the studs if you don't remove the fan shroud....
In some cases wont save much time not removing the fan and shroud.
For the M54, I recommend getting the fan clutch tool.

Not specifically because it is an easy DIY car but simply because I prefer the styling.
I know some e46 models where made in 2006 740.
An 03 325xi once it was like a mini version of my e38 .
My auxiliary fan is not working when I turn on my AC. The snowflake button light does light up green but I get no cold air (I do get air, but not cold air). The weird thing is that the auxiliary fan does work whenever the the temp gets hot. Any idea what...

My air is really cold but the aux fan ....
FYI - disable A/C (turn off issue, my aux fan does not turn on when I have my air on but I DO get cold air.
