Instead of going to a shop to get the system recharged, im considering doing it myself with one of those canisters you buy at AZ. Ive heard that w/o running a vacuum, the cooling performance wont be near as good as it would be if you did.

Lacking this, DIY A/C work may increase risk of needing expensive future repairs to undo what was done.
