calls for 4-6 thermal vias to the ground plane,under the IC.

That works fine,....
They connect one wire to ground (literally), make it a different colour without a ground pin.
If you ask in DIY, you'll get answers skewed towards electric companies do things.
Which says what you are allowed to build.
