My bedroom door is kept closed at all times because I don't need them on my bed or hiding in my closet .
Babies very much but I do have a "cat free zone".

Well, that explains that. I don't think the nest location has spit to do with cats, but admit I could be wrong. Mebbe one of the other folks in the neighborhood has conducted a feral cat eradication program of which you are unaware? Bunnies and pellet...

You probably haven't seen a nest full of half eaten pheasant chicks that were killed by ferral cats for the sheer joy of it .
Yeah, cats can smell, though IIRC they prefer to hunt by sight and sound .
