How about an acordian slider cover to insulate it make a top cover out of styrafoam/cork after sliding the acordian... .

I have a piece of glass, 5" wide. I need to trim just 1/16" off the end. I've heard you can use a sharpening stone, or emery cloth, but it takes a long time. Have you guys done this?

And as WoW pointed out, you absoluely want to make sure that you are wearing the right personal protection... .
Large and thick is this piece of glass? It's doable, but removing 1/16" by hand you could potentially beyond the value of the glass.
