There should not be any need to get the option text.
Try with:
var value = $("#drop-down-id option:selected").attr("value");
If you have the value:
var value = $('#drop-down-id option:selected').text();
This makes no sense.

NFS is notoriously touchy when it comes to mounts being unavailable at mount... .
Another is to use the automounter (autofs), and mount them on demand, although I've always suffered reliability problems with the automounter .
The cron job solution is one way.
