For monitoring your HDD(s) I'd recommend HDTune....
Doesn't need to be installed, you just download and run the exe.

Manually go to http://update.microsoft.com and double-check that you have all high-priority and related optional updates... .
I can only suggest to retry from start:
Uninstall any versions of Smartware from your system and reboot after disconnecting the device .

Afterwards when your OS installed, you can turn on SATA again, it's prolly a SATA driver error .
Did you clear the Cmos and load optimised defaults?
Install your new OS with SATA disabled .
