I think you can only figure out that you were dreaming in your dream if you wake up.

I'm failing I was able to come to the realization that I was just dreaming, and then I could kick myself out of the dream to the realization....
That dreamy quality, but lucid dreaming gets rid of that..you are actually "in" the dream.
