I think you can only figure out that you were dreaming in your dream if you wake up.

I tend to go through periods of dreams that are pretty unremarkable to dreams that really disturb me to the point that I have to talk about them or they haunt me. After falling asleep watching a crime documentary I had a dream that I was buying a house...
