If you don't live in the 'land of the free' you can also install DVD43 which decrypts DVDs in the background and shows... .
Most drives will not let you do this - but you should be able to use a program like VLC to get around the regions in software.

I'm on Mac OS X, have a DVD in the DVD-drive and can look at it in the Finder. I'd like to try to create an iso of it by using the dd command. But to do that I need to know what device to use as an input. How can I find what device my DVD-drive is?

# drutil status Vendor Product Rev MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D KBVB....
You can use drutil as well.
Into the drive, wait until OS X mounts it, and then type the following command in the Terminal:
$ mount, the drive is located at /dev/disk2 .

I have made a bootable USB stick which successfully installs Windows 7.
I'd also like to use it with VM Ware, which only recognises DVD drives.
Can I mount my bootable USB drive to emulate being a DVD drive?
Answer Snippets (Read the full thread at superuser):
Not without using an ISO image..
No, is the answer I seem to have found.
But you can create an ISO image from it using ISORecorder , then mount it with a tool like Virtual Clonedrive to achieve the same effect .
Not that I know of.

Is there a "universal" way of how you can make a bootable USB drive out of a bootable dvd or cd? What makes a USB drive bootable? What makes a dvd and cd bootable?

I have a problem with writing data to a DVD drive - Burning NeroROM starts to burn a disc, then halts and gives an error: Power callibration error. I now am the proud owner of many DVD coasters.
I have updated the firmware but to no avail.
Any ideas?

Running Windows 7 x64. DVD drive is a BenQ DC DQ60 ATA dvd-dl rw. Everything functions correctly in linux, and I can boot to cd/dvds, so the drive itself does work.

Perhaps it is something like SecuROM or something else that is running afoul on your system? I understand it may not be realistic to check, but have you performed a clean install of Windows and seen the same behavior?
Just to remark that BenQ doesn't... .

All of a sudden Windows 7 (64 bit) lost all DVD and CD-ROM drives. It worked fine for about a month, then I don't know what happened.
At first I thought it was a hardware problem - that my DVD-ROM had malfunctioned. But then I realized that Windows 7 ...

I've seen serious problems with CD\DVD ROM drives that have been caused by various file system filter drivers becoming corrupt.
