In both cases the drives are arranged as a 3 drive RAID 5 array.
It should be.
Are there still reliability problems with high capacity magnetic disk drives? When 500GB and 1TB drives first appeared on the market, they had significantly lower reliability than their smaller (250GB and less) brethren. I have first hand anecdotal experience...

It depends on the manufacturer and specs of the drives, but on the whole they are getting more pose a challenge for things like raid, since statistically speaking even on reliable drives drives will spend a few minutes trying to....
I have an HP8530 laptop that currently has two 250GB drives in a RAID 0 configuration. I'm trying to replace these two drives with a 250GB solid-state drive plus a 500GB drive (with no RAID of course). I've installed Windows on the SSD, and I can connect...

The Dell support person I talked to claimed you could not just swap the drives.
There are exceptions, but they're a few weeks ago.
As a general rule, wherever you have SAS drives you can use SATA.
I'm designing a file server based around ZFS and I'm considering using USB flash drives in RAID 1 as boot devices. It seems that few people do this, and I'm wondering why. From what I see, using USB flash drives have some benefits: Cheaper than hard drives...

I agree with womble's points....
My to begin with.
The SD cards in dedicated readers have some distinct advantages, I think, to USB flash drives.
The readers are just attached to an internal USB).
SD memory cards in lieu of USB "flash drives".

I have never been able to make the USB features .
Copy the files from your USB drive to the shared folder in Windows 7 the USB drive shared but I do not recommend this.
Shared Folders for your XP install.
I still haven't decided on a good hard drive for my rig. With the prices as high as they are at the moment, it isn't easy to make a definite decision, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions? I am looking for a simple, 1TB, 7200 RPM hard drive...

Hard drive just stuck it out longer.

What are the merits of buying SAS drives over SATA drives, or vice versa?

Most SAS drives provide tagged command queuing, while most newer SATA drives provide native supports hard drives ....
Also putting provision.
But be aware that 99%+ of SATA drives aren't designed to work 24/7/365 under duress.
Are there external hard drives with 2 drives? I'm looking for a backup solution (my current one is a 20 GB internal drive I put in a drive dock... eek). I don't want to spend much more than a hundred. I do usually buy and prefer Seagate. I see a bunch...

Anything 2 drives.
I see a bunch of 500+GB external drives, but the specs never say if it's 1 drive or 2 -- most of these external cases look like they would house 2 drives.
I put in a drive dock...
I have scripts that expect specific drive letters for hard drives. Windows sometimes assigns the different drive letters [e.g. I expected my Maxtor drive to be E but it's now F, therefore my scripts will fail], depending on the order of how the drives...
