How do I find out if my DVD drive supports DVD-R or DVD+R media (or both) ? (Short of actually buying both types)
I googled on this topic, and could not find a definitive answer. The DVD writer manufacturers' web sites are of no help either.

Answer Snippets (Read the full thread at superuser):
If your drive is a standard 16X DVD-RW drive,....
So, you have the two scenarios:
1) Read from DVD and write to HDD.
The bottleneck in the above situation is DVD like DVD's.
Yes, making an image on the harddrive will be faster .

What is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R discs?
I usually buy DVD+R just because it's a plus. Does it make difference for archivists? The price is almost the same for both formats.

From About....
Better for data as most Computer DvD players (as an example).
DvD+R: Write once BUT data can be added later (not RW, but still accessible).
DvD-R: Write once, better for Video as widely accepted by home DvD players.

If you don't live in the 'land of the free' you can also install DVD43 which decrypts DVDs in the background and shows them... .
Most drives will not let you do this - but you should be able to use a program like VLC to get around the regions in software .
