I use Server 2008 box as my primary machine (I'm a developer) so I've tried to configure it as much as is it can to a behave as a Vist Desktop.

I'm having problems with playing dvds in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04); some dvds work, but most doesn't. The error message in dmesg is:
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0
And all dvd-player programs simply freeze.

If you don't have any other dvd playing....
Can't you try playing the dvd on a laptop or games consoles to see if it is actually the disc at fault.
Unlikely to be the player as the discs are read optically, so no physical contact.

I'm running Windows 7 and am using mymovies.dk to rip the dvds to my harddrive. However, playback isn't watchable as the picture is very stuttery and blocky, only shots that show the same image for a few seconds get shown properly.

I would recommend using an actual ripper insteadI remember playing DVDs on my old Pentium III at 450 MHz, so an Atom processor should handle that just fine.

Burn your dvd-video.
Burn and save ISO files, copy your DVDs.
A newer DVD player might play "any old" MPEG file, MP3, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A.
Based player, it's unlikely to be strictly valid.
