Can't you try playing the dvd on a laptop or games consoles to see if it is actually the disc at fault.
Unlikely to be the player as the discs are read optically, so no physical contact.

With MPC, you can try to play the video, right-click and go.
Media Player regardless of your system configuration.

Burn your dvd-video.
Burn and save ISO files, copy your DVDs.
A newer DVD player might play "any old" MPEG file, MP3, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A.
Based player, it's unlikely to be strictly valid.
