Firstly are we talking this online @ Life Span of DVDs....
I had a plastic, "What is the best way to store DVDs?" Archive them in a deep dark place.
I think keeping CD/DVDs in plastic selves are bad if left in an extreme environment.

GOM Player
http://www.gomlab.com/eng/
The best free DVD playback software is whatever you try, like, and gives you the least hassle... .
VLC will do the trick and it's free! Lots more out there, but it seems to be the preferred one in all the polls I see .

I run Ubuntu 8.10 and many DVDs won't play for me and I don't know why. Is there more software that I need to install outside the default install? Neither Totem or Mplayer will play the DVDs.
Thanks.

What is the point of finalizing CD/DVDs from user's point of view? First of all does it have any impact on reliability of media or it's just a way to ensure that the content of the disk cannot be changed?
I wonder because I use DVDs to store my system...

The only reason to close a disc is if you want full system compatibility .
Well, if you close a disc, you can't rewrite data to it .
I know some car cd players won't recognise it if it hasn't been finalized .
It is mainly for old CD players.

I'm having problems with playing dvds in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04); some dvds work, but most doesn't. The error message in dmesg is:
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0
And all dvd-player programs simply freeze.

The solution is to install libdvdcss2, which can be install by first installing libdvdread4, and then running
/usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
This will add the medibuntu-repos and install libdvdcss... .
It is css encrypted disks that causes this error.

Ubuntu's help has a good page on playing dvd's in restricted formats & what to do ... .
What do you see if you try to play the video from the command line? The reason for not playing the dvd should printout to the terminal .
I would guess codec and not DRM.
