If you use .NET or ....
It does limit more jobs.
It is therefore better to have 5 years of C++ experience (or Java, or Hibernate, or whatever), than to have 2 in C++ and 3 in Java or the other way around.
There is a pyramid of experience.

For Java Development I personally probably prefer NetBeans.
Which you use is a matter of choice.
Both are free and great for Java Development.
Two obvious suggestions are NetBeans and Eclipse.
