My '00 Forester burned through about a 1.5 quarts of oil during a ~700 mile trip this weekend. A lot of my driving was down steep gravel mountain roads where I left the car in 1st or 2nd gear (manual transmission) to keep the speed down without overheating...

If it doesn't consume in your normal....
It isn't all that abnormal, I've seen worse.
The existing leak may be a good place to start… I would not be too concerned about it if that is the first time it has used that much under extended engine braking like that .

No machinist worth his salt would glass bead a cylinder head in most cases.
So, might not be a helpful data point.

A friend and I just picked up a 96 Subaru. From what it seems it's an STI. We got the car in hopes to build it as a project but I think we're in over our heads. Im not sure if it's a real STI but badges ,steering wheel all say STI. Motor is ej25 found...

So i'm doing a motor swap between a 97 outback and a 99 outback(97s the donor) the 97 is an auto and the 99 is 5spd.
My question is am i going to run into any problems or is it like i thought and its just a straight swap?.

You will have to heli-coil the 99 transmission and put an EJ exhaust stud in the lower... .
'97 is a 4 bolt.
'99 is an 8 bolt.
Use the '99 intake manifold to avoid issues with the evap system routing and the '99 not having the carbon can in the engine bay .

I think this means you can use 96 - 04 with your heads, intake and sprockets.
Dash, the 97 - 98 and the 00 - 01 blocks are interchangeable .

And moaning, I left with my right side head (intake side) for $200.
