Your can't cancel an email account as they are for life as per this:

Have you ever had your email hacked and what do you do about it? I have had it happen twice now and am not really sure what is going on. I let yahoo know about it the first time and they told me what to do which I also did the second time.

Using Occam's Razor, that is the most likely-professed "IT pro" would immediately default to a hack.
