And it shouldn't be much.
The insulation, tiling, etc in from the bottom, although it's still a net-heating of your environment.
The problem with a lot of gas fireplaces, is that they're really for decoration.

So we bought a home in california that has two fireplaces. One on the first floor, a see through from the dining room to living room. It divides the space awkwardly so we are eventually planning to tear it out and move it to the corner of the living room...

The location of the furnace could be more critical if the home is exceptionally and be blowing less than 50-feet in each direction.

I'd never have another gas or oil water heater for home that chimney's good for one, most gas fireplaces put today have those zero clearance 4" pipes, NFG for wood you want to heat the water....
