For stack overflowing (used by many a hack), Smashing the Stack for Fun and Profit is the definitive guide for how this works, and how to protect against it .

Recently there was an ethical question asked , but I'd like some input on what might be included in a comprehensive code of ethics. I'm thinking of something along the lines of the Hippocratic Oath that professional software developers would hold to.

There is good programmer and bad programmer (and the scale between) .
There is no ethic in our profession.
I probably to cynical on this:).
To take code from work so what ethic question is here ? Just take it.

Is it ethical to hack real systems owned by someone else? Not for profit, but to test your security knowledge and learn something new. I talk only about hacks, which does not make any damage to system, just proves there are some security holes.

The key flaw I see in your question is that you seem to believe it is possible to correctly assess from the outside what the damage hacking will do to a given system .

When asked to enter the license, use the one from the sticker on the computer your installing... .
My opinion:
with label => Any XP installation CD (but not a recovery CD, meant for another type of computer) should 'enable' you to install (=is ethical).

I'm working on a piece of software that creates a contract and captures the client's signature via gif and applies it to the contract (and spits out a pdf). Now, we're storing the data from the contract but when it comes to the signature, I'm not sure...

I don't know, a GIF can be re-created....
So whether you store the original GIF does not seem to make a difference, security wise .
The signature can still be extracted from the PDF.
If it's grey enough an area, I'd vote for don't-store-it .
Talk to a lawyer.

I see no ethical problem here if you disclose that your primary expertise is on platforms other than the one that they're hiring you to develop on.
