Generally if you have enough evidence to prove your intentions you will be OK, however I personally know.
But as an Australian he can leave and reenter, and try his luck in being granted a tourist visa.

Thanks alot If you are travelling to your home country then you can apply dependant visa for your later on that cost of visa was bit less....
