Normally your passport needs to be good for at least 6 months after your entry date, but with travel to the US you....
We traveled last year to the US with our passport expiry date 4 days after retuning from Disney and had no problems.

Once we (hopefully) arrive in Oz ours and the childrens passports will run out, do we then reapply in Oz for Autralian passports or back in UK for British ones?

On a cruise for instance, then you would need a new one if arriving back in to the US after the expiry date of birth, passport details and answers to the eligibility questions are still the same you're good to go.

You can call UKBA and ask for the Recorded Delivery number for your passport.
Though it says to arrive after the BRP.
