Discussions about factor form

Using fit-PC small form factor PCs in a cluster I have recently seen Fit-PC small form factor Linux machines on sale which have a very low power usage. Would it be feasible to create a cluster of these and just plug and play to expand the cluster? Why do they use laptop form factor HDD's for storage servers? The storage servers I've seen generally use 2.5" drives instead of 3.5" drives. In my experience the larger drives have better capacity, speed, and durability. Why are the smaller ones favored in servers? Note this doesn't apply to C: drives.
