The best way to do is on of the best thermal compounds you can buy, but does your heat sink and fan move around any at all plugging the ESC fan into the plug....
I run the Traxxas ESC fan an the Integy heatsink with a single fan.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 with a Nvidia GeForce 7800 video card.

It may allow you to detect the voltage on the fan circuit as well so you'll know if power is getting to the fan.
That allows you to adjust video card settings such as fan speed.
