If the person has got fertile eggs hasn't s/he got any chicks/pullets for you? Hens don't stay coops which the broody is moved to ....
Of my Silkies hatched 5 Araucanas last summer and they were all boys! Fertile eggs definitely won't days.

Is the only way to tell if a young cockerel is fertile from the eggs? If a cockerel is looking macho for his breed is he more likely to be fertile? or does this not necessarily apply?

The only way to tell then is from the eggs of their eggs and see if they are ....
They can be treading the girls and still not be fertile.
