We have two checking....
Any "left over" money we had after paying bills and saving was our to spend as we liked .
We have a household budget that we split (or used to, I'm not working currently) and I would give may DH my portion of the bills money .

I agree with setting everything to pay ahead.
That being said, I think you can find time in there atleast once a week to look at your bills .
Do you bank online? We do and have everything just automatically set to pay .

I keep track of my monthly expenses in an Excel sheet. And I have noticed that petrol expenses are just about 6% of my overall monthly expenses. Which implies that a 10% hike in petrol prices doesn't affect my finances that much.
