I have a modest income, I'd like to have more :) I just don't know how to get started. For me, as an outsider, "investing" is a black box where you put $5, then a miracle occurs, and you pull out $10.

It depends largely on your age and what this money is going to be used accounts and CDs...
If you're nearing retirement, then putting money into a safer, more stable investment makes sense.
