I have to okay what groups get what updates within my WSUS server...supposedly; job done.
If you're running a WSUS update server you can pick and choose what updates are allowed to go out to your clients.

I'm trying to decide and plan how to install WSUS. We have a number of workstations (Windows XP, Windows 2000 - the win 2k ones are being upgraded at the moment)

I wouldn't install it on a DC; these are the most important servers in your entire Domain, so it makes sense to not load....

My question is simple, and I think I know my answer - I'm really after a confirmation from others.
Obviously, if my WSUS server dies I will have some hefty downloads to do once it is back up, and that's not a problem. I was thinking more of the database...

Rebuilding the WSUS server is correct (though if the update URL for the replacement WSUS server is the same as the failed WSUS server no changes to the client configuration re: Group Policy, registry settings, etc, would be necessary....

Basic scenario is a PC repair shop where there's a lot of time being essentially wasted downloading/installing Windows updates on individual machines. I had intended to set up an in-house WSUS server to deal with this, but as I got into the install documentation...

The German mag c't once wrote a script called WSUSOffline to apply WSUS updates without internet connection....
Might be more of a pain than it's worth.
Here's a FAQ about it ...
It wouldn't work as nicely as WSUS, but it might be a solution.

Hi,
Our WSUS in our SCCM site get a very lage WSUSContent folder, and I found a guide how to clean it. But after that I get an WSUS error in SCCM.

On server which I'm using for WSUS 3, one day i found this:
The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server Database.

Log onto the WSUS server, and find the folder that SQL is installed in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\ by default.
This issue - I don't know enough about the sharepoint console to say for sure though .

Is the old server still on the network and visible? Have you tried an ipconfig /flushdns
