I have a wood-burning fireplace that I'm looking to get some actual heat out of. I live in a 200 year old house and in trying to keep to the spirit of the house, I'm not interested in anything involving motors, pellets, etc. ...

For the first time I am actually burning wood in the fireplace (have always had gas logs before). I am looking for advice on removing and disposing of the ashes (without making a total mess). Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

When smoke....
The bear feet accessory because the heat wasn't going to straight up, and did any grandma/grandpa's have baffles for heat retention in the stove.
It slightly just to allow the smoke out, yet retain as much heat as you can.
