I need to write a very simple 3D physics simulator in Java, cube and spheres bumping into each other, not much more. I've never did anything like that, where should I start? Any documentation on how it is done? any libraries I could re-use?

I think I am right in thinking that the image quality shouldn't be affected even though you have a great focal range? I know one is that it would be more....
Longer focal length but also a lot more focal range (621mm compared to 230mm).

Nikon 300mm f/4 AF-S? I'm doing photo journalism and wondering if this lens is good for taking candid photos of people hanging out at the beach? Or is the focal length too close (I have a DX body). I want to be able to get them from head to toe.

They are labeled as their true focal length is considered a "normal" lens on a DX camera.
DX lenses aren't labeled with a multiplier.
Of an FX camera.
