I can't load as much of the map compared to the newer models but can....
Garmin has some map products that look useful, like a routable AT map anything from Garmin and it's free.
To gpsfiledepot.com for free maps.

I have a laptop and have Hema Raser maps loaded into it with Ozi Explorer, including Google Earth.
However I have a Garmin Etrex which needs to have Australian Maps...

For SD cards, yes you can use a card adapter Garmin 1390
1- as soon as I copy the new map into the Map folder, even if I did not delete the old map....
The Garmin data card discussed here is not an SD card.

What is the largest size micro sd card this unit will accept. I have a 2g card in my csx but want a larger one in the 62s. Will 8g be too big.

The 62 is a newer model than my Oregon 400t so perhaps it's usable to, a 4GB SD card is plenty....
You'll hit the 4000 map for traditional Garmin maps.
Honestly 4GB should cover all your needs.
According to Garmin it's fine.

I have installed a map into the main memory using mapinstall. Is it possible to now move it from there to the SD card? I didn't see any option to install to the SD card in the first instance.

As for the SD card, Winblows tells me I must format it but it already the gmapprom.img file from the Nuvi to a folder on the SD card called Map.
