Given a partition intended solely for storing music, video and so-on, is it possible to hide the lost+found directory?

Ext2/3 does.
Lost+Found is where FSCK is going to deposit bits of files that it was able to recover if your file at the next fsck), or you can use a different file system which doesn't need a lost+found.

When you create some Linux filesystems like ext3 a 'lost+found' directory is created. According to this files will be placed there if files where damaged from some kind of system crash.
What happens if this directory is removed, and the system crashes...

On startup most distributions run fsck if the filesystem is detected as... .
If you have no lost+found , e2fsck (I have not inspected the code to other fsck implementations will recreate the lost+found directory if it is missing.

TrikeFest Lost and Found ATCTim lost his new red camera. Someone has to have found it. I will go through the camping box again tonight if it does not turn up.
