Actually as I read your post closer I realize that you are plugging the HD into another computer then the original cloned from, it this right?
Both computer have different hardware, and I believe the compac is a OEM install, This might be the cause, others... .

Ghost pretty much always works, unless you want to migrate to different hardware .
Paragon is good.
We use partition manager server.
+1 for Paragon Programs.
