Why Japan have more gadgets available than US?
They do, look up a website for that clamshell Zaurus, there are companies that export Japanese electronics that never make their way to the United States... Forgot what it was called, a quick search might bring it up, I think it was even mentioned in a Brighthand review...

What gadgets did you use before the Sony Reader?
My experience was virtually every model of iPaq that first Compaq, and then HP, brought out, finishing up with an iPaq 4900-series model with a full 640x480 VGA res screen. I tried Palms, but just didn't "click" with them, whereas for me the Pocket PC was just a "natural" thing and, for me, the iPaqs were always the "Rolls Royce" of Pocket PCs. I went through a range of different book reading software, eventually finishing up with "uBook", which is still far and away my favourite reading software.

In a tight economy, which gadgets are still essential?
I'd say a computer and a phone, but like what John Hiller said, those are things we can live without actually. They're only essential because those are the things you usually need for work. Of course, it all depends on what kind of lifestyle you have - if you're an office person, you'll obviously need these 2 things, but if you live life like Bear Grylls, then you'll probably need some high-tech GPRS tracking device and other survival stuff.
