You should change 25-35% of the water with a gravel vacuum once a week.
Then when you do water changes, you add only enough to condition the water you add.
You put in the amount it says to put in per gallon.

I first got a 5.5 gallon. Then wanted a 10 gallon. Well, I went to Petco today to look at fish and saw a 15 gallon tank kit for $50 bucks. What a steal! So we got it! Hooray, a bigger tank.

Also, I don't recommend using a used hair band.
The band stays around the lip of the bottle.
Won't that just release the possibly dirty hairband into your water supply? Also good luck tearing because the water cooler pokes a hole in it.
