Just a quick question aimed at anyone who can help me. I only started growing veggies last May so this will be my first full seaon of doing it.
I now have a 5 month old daughter who totally loves pureed sweet potato...

Butternuts are notoriously hard to crack whereas a nice sweet squash ....
My advice, grow some other squash types.
Sweet potato rather than sprawling.
Hi, butternut squash are fairly easy, although I must admit it's a bit warmer here.

Why not consider a raised garden bed? I Had someone bring me a dumptruck load of good topsoil, then till it in spring ,remove any large debris and make your garden rows and plant your favorite yard for gardening or letting the children....

Anyone else grow your own food? Our first batch of starters are coming along nicely.
Broccoli, lettuce, chard, eggplant, onions, peppers (which haven't sprouted yet), a couple of different tomatoes and probably something I'm forgetting. We'll be starting...

As far as the squash and melons go, make sure when they start growing that you keep an eye out for ants.
I'd probably take gardening up if I had my own.
