The diagrams I've seen for making an OR gate from a NAND gate use 3 NAND gates but if you have both inputs connected to both connectors of a NAND gate and then the output of this gate as inputs to both connectors of a second NAND gate it should behave...

In practice connecting be acting as an AND gate.
After all you don't need any gate for that kind of "OR gate".
Both inputs connected to both inputs of a NAND gate? This sounds like a short circuit between both inputs.

As the topic says, if you build a gate station in a system with a gate ship in it, the gate ship will not get turned into (replaced) the gate station (The tech description for gate stations indicates this happens). Also you can build new gate stations...
