What I noticed ....
It really depends on the gem project quicker, but I don't know.
Some are rock solid, others are pre-alpha quality.
There is a huge range in quality/stability of gems from both sources.

To vendor gems, the error appears to be a user error you are decompressing the gem into the wrong or using rake? Since a gem in the vendor/gems directory has this format - gem-name-VERSION .
I've been out of the Ruby world for a while (3 years), but I'm coming back for a project. I am now overwhelmed by all the gems available. Is there a list of gems by popularity/best gems? And where is the current list of all the gems?

For all other gems you can use the vendor/gems directory deployable without depending on system installed gems and secondly it freezes a specific version of a gem to your application....
The binary gems are the real problem.
