But it's not nested politically and the results are fast .
For example, in a strictly geographic sense, Vatican City is nested within Italy.
There is the obvious "geographic nesting", but there are less obvious logical nestings.

Here's some example CSV output: input : gaborone, botswana output: 2... .
You can get output as XML, JSON, CSV.
It'll take a string and attempt to parse it to a location .
Probably the easiest method would be to use something like the Google Geocoding API .

If not, check libraries like SharpMap and Proj.Net - They will let you build a true geographic point.
Is which IPs are assigned to which ISPs public information? How do geo IP services obtain this information and maintain this information? How can I personally figure out where a certain IP belongs without using one of these services?

This is why Google acquried Urchin so they could use their services for Google Analytics, which provides very accurate IP-to-geographic-region information.
Address ranges regardless of geographic region.

You can't tell for sure and it can be inaccurate but services do exist to map IP addresses to their geographical location.
There are a lot of good solutions for audio and video conferencing, task, calender and document management. We got specs, uml diagrams, code generators, etc. But still companies pour tons of cash so that people can be physically there even in the times...

We haven't really got into....
We use a combination of Skype IM, Skype Voice, mobile phones and email to keep in touch .
You're either co-located or you're not.
Distance isn't to much the problem, to be honest.
Period.
Nothing beat a face to face meeting.
We would like to keep our hosting in the US. But for European traffic, where is the best location for ping/response times? (East Coast, West Coast, Central etc)

There are plenty of well-connected facilities in New Jersey and Manhattan that serve the ... .
The East Coast is good.
East coast is definitely best, latency to the rest of the US shouldn't exceed 40ms, and you can get to most of Europe for not much more .
