I'm searching a lot on DAAD but I guess i need to start googling research groups .
I wouldn't mind doing a masters in Germany and then returning to the US for a phD.
A masters there (2 years) or a full phD.

It shouldn't be a PhD though (to me, coursework with a capstone simply shouldn't be called a PhD but a MA or Dipl to Queen's Brian May, who got his PhD ....

I think most PhD candidates have master's degrees in the UK of the first year is a taught course.
I have no experience with Germany or the Netherlands, but for the UK: Most PhD programs are 3 years or classes to go to.
